PSL activists marching against the RNC in Cleveland.
“It’s a complete outrage that the Republicans are about to nominate the epitome of American racism, Trump, as the Republican’s presidential candidate,” said Party for Socialism and Liberation presidential candidate Gloria La Riva. “We condemn Trump for his comments calling for the banning of Muslim immigrants and his attacks on Mexican people. He is an opportunistic hate monger who takes advantage of the people's economic insecurities by blaming people of color for our country's social problems.”
Supporters of the Gloria La Riva for President campaign have been in the streets of Cleveland protesting against the Republican National Convention, and will hold events against the Democratic National Convention next week in Philadelphia.
Regarding the RNC, La Riva said: “They will nominate Trump this year but we shouldn't be surprised because the Republican Party has never been for the people. The party gets its biggest donations from Wall Street banks and giant corporations, and it has pursued veiled attacks on people of color for decades.”
Commenting on the VP pick, La Riva said: “Trump has picked Indiana Governor Mike Pence as his running mate, saying that he admired his work, but it’s well known that Pence’s work has principally been attacks against women and LGBTQ rights. In 2015, he signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which gave businesses the freedom to discriminate against LGBTQ people. Pence is also an enemy of women’s rights, particularly for his attempts to de-fund Planned Parenthood in an attempt to restrict access to safe abortion services and healthcare.
“But voting for Hillary is not the way to defeat Trump. The 'lesser-of-two-evils' ideology only goes so far, especially when the candidates of both major parties are equally evil. Clinton is a dangerous war monger. We have seen her aggression against Iraq, Libya, Syria and Russia. She is thoroughly in the pocket of Wall Street, taking millions of dollars in donations from them while at the very same time making speeches proclaiming that she is against them. Clinton would take this country down a very bad path, as would Trump.
“The only way to defeat Trump, Pence and all the reactionary politicians is for people to get into the streets and protest. We must rebuild the movement, and create solidarity between the Black Lives Matter, immigration, environmental, anti-war, women’s, LGBTQ and union movements. That is the way we can win this struggle against racism and bigotry once and for all.”
