National March on Washington, D.C. to Support Palestine - March 20, 2016
The Gloria La Riva for President Campaign stands in full solidarity with the international Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign launched by more than 170 Palestinian labor, student, women’s and other civil society organizations in 2005. Many of the active supporters of the La Riva for President Campaign are long-time organizers and activists in the Palestine Solidarity Movement.
The BDS campaign, based on similar campaigns that helped bring about the end to the apartheid system in South Africa, has gained significant support in many countries from academic associations, church denominations, student and union organizations.
The BDS movement demands that Israel: End its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands occupied in June 1967 and dismantles the Wall; recognizes the fundamental rights of the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality; and respects, protects and promotes the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN Resolution 194. It fights for an end to Israeli apartheid.
Both of the presumptive major capitalist party candidates, Trump and Clinton, have expressed full support for Israel, outrageously painting Israel as “victim” and the Palestinians as “aggressor,” in keeping with the Israeli narrative that is constantly regurgitated by the corporate media here.
Hillary Clinton has made unlimited support for Israel a hallmark of her campaign. At the convention of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in March 2016, she called for a campaign to destroy the BDS movement, saying, “we must be united in fighting back against BDS.”
In a letter to a billionaire donor, Haim Saban, in June 2015, she called for making the “countering of BDS a priority,” and condemned “attempts to compare Israel to South African apartheid.” Saban rewarded Clinton with a $5 million donation to one of her Super-Pacs.
While Clinton, who has known nothing but a life of privilege, can deny that Israel is an apartheid society, those who suffered under the South African apartheid system know better, and have built the strongest BDS movement of any country.
BDS South Africa responded to Clinton’s speech: “Even though BDS is increasingly supported by progressive Israelis and members of the Jewish community (who are critical of Israel’s illegal occupation and apartheid policies) Clinton has tried to falsely suggest that the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement is anti-Semitic.”
“Israel’s policies against the indigenous Palestinians (Muslims, Christians and others) has been compared to Apartheid South Africa by anti-apartheid icons including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, John Dugard, Ahmed Kathrada, Winnie Mandela, Denis Goldberg and others.”
The Gloria La Riva for President Campaign supports the right of return for all Palestinian refugees, an end to Israeli apartheid and colonial occupation, and stopping all U.S. aid to Israel.
